You Know the Matrix. So Why Are You Still Living In It?

David Adebanwo7 min readComment

If you don’t think carefully about what you’re about to read, there is a real chance your life will look exactly like the lives of many of our fathers and forefathers.

Not because you aren’t smart. Not because you don’t know better. But because knowing is not the same as escaping.

The Matrix Most of Us Were Born Into

Think about the average life of many of our parents and grandparents. For the vast majority of them, it went something like this:

  • They were born, taught to walk, to talk, to read and to recognise people.

  • They were pushed straight into the system: go to school, read your books, pass your exams.

  • Primary school, secondary school, university.

  • Get a certificate. Get a job. Hold on to the job, or jump from one job to another.

  • Get married, have children, keep working the same job.

  • Grow old, and begin to rely on their children to take care of them.

Others never got the job, or left the job to start a business. They struggled with the business, kept struggling, hoped their children would carry it on, and when the children didn’t, the business simply stopped.

This pattern has lingered for generations. This is the matrix.

Three generations of a family sitting together at home: grandmother, mother and son

Why Knowing About the Matrix Won’t Save You

Here is the sad part. Our generation believes we won’t fall into the same pattern, because we know more. We have the internet. We read books. We watch videos. We are more informed than any generation before us.

And it’s true: many of you are genuinely doing a lot to build capacity, to grow and to develop. That is a sincere truth.

But many of our parents did the same thing. They read, they learned, they worked hard. And they still ended up in the matrix.

Most of us know the matrix exists. Most of us don’t want to be part of it. But most of us are doing very, very little to actually get out. So even though you know, there is still a high chance you will end up in it.

That leaves the real question: now that you know, how do you get yourself out?

The Missing Piece: Focus

At Valuedity, we strongly believe that one of the major things that separates people who achieve significant results from everyone else is focus.

It is impossible to truly focus on something and not achieve significant results in it.

So if you have discovered your passion, your talent, your potential, or even a glimpse of why you were born, ask yourself honestly:

  • How much of your time is going into it?

  • How much of your energy and intelligence?

  • How much of your money and resources?

Focus makes you relentless. It makes you restless until you find the solution. The major reason so many people in our generation, fully aware of the matrix, will still end up living a life of struggle is simple: lack of focus. Most of us are distracted.

You Can’t Control Your Mind. But You Can Program It.

Let’s be honest: you won’t finish reading this and suddenly become focused. It doesn’t work that way.

Focus is not something you switch on. It comes from your mentality, and your mentality determines your life.

But here’s the problem: you can’t control your mentality. If you could, you would decide to think like a billionaire today and that would be the end of it. You can’t. You can only influence it.

So if your mind controls your life, and you can’t control your mind, what do you do? You build a system and a structure that programs your mind in the right direction. It’s the same belief behind everything we do at Valuedity, from mentoring people to building systems for businesses: people fail, but systems don’t.

Here is the system, step by step. Read it carefully.

The 5-Step System to Program Your Mind for Focus

Step 1: Discover Your Purpose of Existence

Everything starts here. If you set plans, strategies and systems that are not aligned with why you were born, several things can happen:

  1. You get confused along the way.

  2. You end up harming people instead of helping them.

  3. You become sad and even depressed, because you’re pursuing something that was never part of your destiny.

No matter how much you think you can achieve, without knowing your purpose, any of these can happen to you.

You don’t need to know every detail of why God put you on earth. You need an idea, and then you run with it. If part of your purpose is to build a great company, run with that. If it’s to bring people closer to God, run with that.

This is exactly why we built Valuedity Premium. Premium is where you discover your purpose and clarify your life vision, with a team that takes you closer, day by day, to what God sent you on earth to do.

Step 2: Write Down Your Goals, Targets and Plan

Many people discover their purpose and stop there. The second step is to write down, clearly and specifically:

  • your goals,

  • your targets, and

  • the plan: the things you must do to get to your purpose.

Don’t set goals before you know your purpose. Set them in line with it.

Why does writing it down matter so much? Remember, we are not building a system for you. We are building a system for your mentality, because your mentality is what chooses for you. You can want success badly and still not have it, because it hasn’t been programmed into your mind. Making your goals clear and written is how you begin that programming: you are telling your mind, in no uncertain terms, this is what I want to achieve.

Step 3: Read Your Goals Every Day, and Consume the Right Content

Most people write their goals down, then never look at them again. Don’t be most people.

Write your goals somewhere you will see them, and paste them on your wall. Every morning when you wake up, your eyes see them and your mind processes them. Every single day, that is doing something to your mentality.

Then guard what you consume. By “content”, we mean anything that enters your eyes and your ears: videos, audio, books, articles, conversations, conferences. Make sure it feeds directly into the goals you wrote, in line with your purpose.

This is why daily accountability sits at the heart of Premium. Members send a short report on their progress every day and our team follows up with them every day, so the programming never stops. Don’t joke with this step.

Step 4: Take Action, No Matter How Small

After you’ve written your goals and fed your mind, act. And don’t say the action is too small. Nothing is too small.

Want to start a business? Don’t wait until you have money. Start something:

Whatever it is, start. Action is what finally forces your mind to believe what you wrote. And we pray God gives you the grace to act, and to act in the right way.

Step 5: Know What Distracts You, and Cut It Off

As you do all of this, be very mindful of distraction. You cannot avoid what you don’t know, so you must identify what distracts you.

Here is our definition: a distraction is anything that is not drawing you closer to your purpose of existence. Anything that pulls you away, or slows you down, is a distraction, no matter what it is.

That means even good things can distract you. Helping people can be a distraction. Even prayer can become a distraction when it is used to avoid the work you were sent to do. And distraction can come from anyone, including your parents, your siblings and your closest friends.

Distraction is a big subject, and we will be discussing it in detail in a coming message. For now, start by naming yours.

When You Do These Things, Results Follow

Find your purpose. Write it down. Read it every day and feed your mind the right content. Act, no matter how small. Guard yourself against distraction.

Do these consistently, and you will produce significant results. Not because you forced yourself to focus, but because you built a system that programmed your mind to.

That is how you step out of the matrix.

Don’t Do This Alone
